Our office moved recently from "downtown" bkln, albeit the mouth of the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges to DUMBO, which is Down Under The Manhattan Bridge Overpass. Our old office was a straight shot on the G train with just enough walking to a from the Subway to keep me honest. Now I've gotta do the L into Manhattan and the F back out thing...which is ridiculous. I thought about walking it, 3.7 miles each way, but haven't.
This is a great NYC series, right? Nathanael, I knew you were a vicious walker. How far is your daily commute?
I'd say my most famous walk would be from work to home: 46th St. & Park Ave. to 107th St & Manhattan Ave. It was a 3.2 mile walk, mostly walking up Central Park West. I would do it if I had no plans afterwork and there was decent weather. Often I would "brush my teeth" in the park on the way up, making the iPod tunes attached to my ears sound that much sweeter. It also seemed to drastically increase the chances of me getting hit by a car, but thankfully I've managed to avoid that.
Now that I work in Jersey a walk home from work is impossible. Unless maybe I took a ferry for once instead of the PATH, then walked from there? That'd be a hike and a half.
it is a great series, truly. at the old place it was 4 in, 4 back, clocking in at 40 a week, not including the ill-planned grocery run. with no rain, that also digests about 200 pages of "fun," maybe only a 100 or so of "tough."
but, things have changed. the life took its toll — i'm fit and cranky, watching the sun go down on my grievance — my "developing" joints. we are closer now, i can see downtown from my kitchen window, 2 in, 3 back — found an extra hour, which i spend in twilight, suggesting glory.
although i must say, it would be nice to "go another way."
