Big Balls or Science Boobies!

Left: All the water in the world (1.4087 billion cubic kilometres of it) including sea water, ice, lakes, rivers, ground water, clouds, etc.

Right: All the air in the atmosphere (5140 trillion tonnes of it) gathered into a ball at sea-level density. Shown on the same scale as the Earth.

Very fun picture. Honestly, my first thought was "Earth Boobies." Then after reading the caption, I thought it was interesting. Clean looking. Then I starting feeling skeptical... The first comment on the blog that posted this was, "great image, only a little mistake, i think the left Earth will be better without the north pole, because the sphere of water teorically contains him." Excellent point. It's a cool image, a fun way to think MAYBE it's like that, but I think it's probably scientifically inaccurate.

I do not post scientifically inaccurate photos on this blog! I am a scientist above all else!

speaking of water . . . i heard that nyc has the cleanest in the country. so, congrats to you. in mildly related fun fact news, i also heard that the entire world's population could fit in the state of texas and still have a less dense population than that of the present-day bronx. questions? comments? concerns? maybe, more facts?

Manhattan's downtown southern tip area is predominantly landfill. The actual "natural" Manhattan makes up only 75% of the total area in the downtown region.
