I know Nat has and maybe Matt and Brad have heard me dive into my theories about 1975 & the state of rock 'n roll (think about it, especially the Boss, punk, disco, the George Lucas effect, dumb 70's Americanism)...well Lennon's "Lost Weekend" material is around that time and is a god blessed treasure chest...not only Mind Games and Walls & Bridges (which I think is some of his best material, ever, if you like the personal stuff), but also Young Americans the Bowie album (the title track and 'Fame'), and Pussycats the Nilsson album ('Many Rivers to Cross' and 'Old Forgotten Soldier')- (read the story on this album too, man blew out his voice and still killed it, his other shit [Schmilsson, Son of Schmilsson, & Sings Newman] is great too). From there you gotta check out the original version of 'Many Rivers to Cross' and the other stuff from The Harder They Come soundtrack and the Walkmens version of the entire Pussycats album...hope you could follow that punctuation. If not, i'm walling to speak in lengths about any of it...jmseger@gmail.com
i remember having many an argue over clownpenis.fart . . . speaking of jim cliff, he was just a novelty to me until i saw him on snl. many rivers too cross, indeed (like omar). sold. incredible voice. baffling precision. startling command.
secret comment: concerning the quality of lennon's output in '75, bobby too, what's that tell ya about women? or better yet, what's that tell about men? men who love women?
Yea, I've never seen the Cliff, but I could see where you're coming from just based on his hearing him. It's nice pop.
clownpenis.fart?
Totally agree about the bob '75 thing...it's like the old guard had some sort of breakdown
Oddly enough, both John Lennon's and Bob Dylan's 1975 efforts had their fair share of criticism. Maybe their peers had grown up too, became too accustomed to pop (insert any band your mom dances to from the 70's; ie. Chicago and Paul Simon)? Maybe it took ears like our own to truly appreciate their efforts? Of course I love looking at pictures from the Lennon book. His girl looks crazy and reminds me of dress-up days in Richmond, especially Lucas ("Do those pants get any tighter? They do?").
clownpenis.far is an old SNL sketch from when we were in high school. On the "Fox Business" link from this post, the video is available. Enjoy!
